Work at CHEJ!

Open Positions
(Updated 12/16/09)

The Center For Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) is celebrating its 25th year of empowering groups across the nation to protect their communities from the health risks posed by contamination of their soil, air, water or food. CHEJ does this by providing organizing, technical and research assistance, by coordinating nationwide issue-focused campaigns, and by building a movement, from the bottom up. The Center is working to harness the power of the grassroots to curtail the polluting power of industry and government. Our executive director, Lois Marie Gibbs, who was the community leader at Love Canal, New York, founded CHEJ in 1981.

Environmental Health Organizer For NY Green Schools Campaign

The Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ) is a national organization that empowers communities to create safe, healthy and sustainable environments. CHEJ was instrumental in establishing some of the first national policies to protect communities such as the Superfund Program and Right-to-Know. Our recent work is on issues such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), dioxin, bisphenol A (BPA), green purchasing and greening schools. CHEJ's goal is to prevent harm from toxic exposures-particularly among vulnerable populations such as children.

CHEJ is seeking a part-time campaign organizer for a new New York State campaign to green schools inside and out
. On the outside, the campaign is focused on passing a statewide policy to establish a safe siting process to ensure schools are not located near or on contaminated sites or toxic facilities. On the inside of schools, the campaign is focused on creating local/regional PVC-free policies for school supplies and building materials. We are looking for a part-time organizer with campaign organizing skills to assist two CHEJ staff, located in New York City and Albany area offices, to pass these green schools policies. Read more

Childproofing Our Communities Campaign Coordinator

The Child Proofing Our Communities Campaign works to protect children from exposure to environmental health hazards where they live, learn, play and pray. We help communities create safer and healthier environments for children through innovative trainings, programs and personal assistance.

The current focus of the Childproofing Our Communities Campaign is to pass strong comprehensive safe school siting laws starting with strong EPA national voluntary guidelines that are currently being written. The campaign is at an exciting point in bringing attention to the need for state and local policies on safe school siting and assisting local and state leaders in passing effective policies. We are looking for a strong campaigner with community organizing skills to continue this work by leading a national working group, assisting state and local leaders in their effort to pass policy, and pressuring governmental agency’s through innovative tactics and communication. Internships

The Center For Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) was founded in 1981, as the Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste, by Lois Gibbs, the community leader at Love Canal. CHEJ was formed to meet the urgent need for support and technical assistance by people struggling for environmental justice across the country. Because CHEJ is uniquely different from traditional environmental efforts, our philosophy is to teach and empower by helping grassroots groups and individuals (including interns) build upon their strengths. Through our organizing, leadership development, research and technical assistance, we empower individuals with skills and information to make sound judgements and become part of the political decision making process to protect health and our natural resources.

Hands-On "Work/Learn" Program Specifics
Interns work on a variety of topics such as environmental racism, children and toxics, non-profit management, fundraising, incineration and landfills, sludge disposal, corporate greenwashing and medical waste incineration. In addition to working on special projects, interns will gain insight into the complexities of environmental issues that involve many different players, an appreciation of science for the public interest, the importance of data in advocacy and a respect for the power of informed citizens. Interns are given tasks to match their interests, skills and background with CHEJ's need, and are directed by a staff person in the same area of interest.

Specific Positions
Specific positions include: Research in Science and Policy, Toxicology, Journalism, Writing, Membership Recruitment, Data Entry, Library Science, Development and Grassroots Organizing.

Interns are also invited to join and work on CHEJ's campaigns:
